The American Festival Pops Orchestra (AFPO) offers performances dedicated to showcasing the finest music of the popular symphonic orchestral genre. Through lively programming, this dynamic ensemble treats audiences to a festive Pops experience that pays tribute to American music of the Classical and Jazz traditions, iconic music from Hollywood motion pictures, and the Great American Songbook. The AFPO performs under the leadership of its new Artistic Director and Conductor, Peter Wilson, who is committed to the vision of AFPO Founder and Conductor Emeritus, Anthony Maiello.
A gathering of extraordinary musical talent, the American Festival Pops Orchestra makes its home at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax, Virginia and the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, Virginia. Comprising more than 60 professional musicians from the National Capital Region, the AFPO features members of Mason’s music faculty, off-duty members of U.S. premiere military ensembles, and the best of local regional orchestras. The AFPO is also proud to include a select group of talented student musicians from Mason’s Dewberry Family School of Music.
The AFPO is unique among Pops Orchestras in that it is a full symphony orchestra featuring an imbedded Big Band, creating truly electrifying performances that leave audiences cheering for more! Whether performing Broadway hits, legendary film scores, or light classics, the American Festival Pops Orchestra will strike a nostalgic chord with fans of all ages.
