4 p.m. Concert

Featuring Karen Johnson, violin, and Jennifer Kloetzel, cello

  • Double Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra

  • Academic Festival Overture

  • Symphony No. 1

Besides being a tremendously exciting work of art, Brahms’ double concerto shows the diplomatic power of music. Brahms’ friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim, was upset at him. When another friend, a cellist, asked Brahms to write a concerto for him, Brahms instead wrote a “double” concerto for two soloists, cello and violin. Joachim reportedly liked it so much that he started talking to Brahms again! The Richmond Philharmonic is eager to share the incredible talents of our friends, the nationally renowned soloists Karen Johnson and Jennifer Kloetzel, as well as more music from Johannes Brahms. Remember, admission is free!
